Barcelona will pay up to 90% of Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s salary during Ajax loan

Earlier this week, Barcelona reached an agreement with Ajax over a loan deal for goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The Germany international will spent the 2026-27 season in Amsterdam, where he hopes to recover some prominence after two years in the wilderness.

As was the case in January when he returned to action following shoulder surgery, ter Stegen has been told that he is not counted on by Hansi Flick. Because of this, arrangements have been made for him to depart – his high salary has ruled out a sale, which is why Barcelona have sought to organise another loan move in order to free up some of his wages.

In the days since the agreement between Barcelona and Ajax was revealed, there has been speculation over exactly how much each club will pay towards ter Stegen’s salary. In the last 24 hours, it was reported that the split was dependant on whether the 33-year-old was playing or not, but now, Jijantes FC (via Sport) have claimed that the Catalans will pay the vast majority.

Ajax will only cover 10-15% of ter Stegen’s salary

Ajax would only cover 10-15% of ter Stegen’s wages for the entire season, whereas the remaining 85-90% would be assumed by Barcelona. Given that he is one of the biggest earners at the club, this is still a significant portion that is being saved by the Catalan club, although they would have surely hoped for a bigger saving.

Nevertheless, Barcelona have managed to save big already this summer by getting Robert Lewandowski’s wages off the books, so ter Stegen’s exit will help free up more space in their salary cap – which is essential given that they are now back within La Liga’s 1:1 rule, meaning that signing players is much easier than before. It remains to be seen just how much it helps getting a portion of the goalkeeper’s wages off the books.
