The 22-year-old, once seen as an untouchable pillar of the club’s long-term future, has seen his status at Camp Nou fall from indispensable to transferable following an underwhelming campaign hampered by injuries and the mid-season arrival of Joao Cancelo, whom Barcelona are now eager to sign permanently from Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal.
With the Barcelona hierarchy prioritising Cancelo’s future while also eyeing Marc Cucurella, Balde now faces the prospect of a fringe role going forward.
This shift could work in Manchester United’s favour as they seek to bring a new left-back to Old Trafford. United have made the position a summer priority and are actively tracking several options, including Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown.
Balde would be a welcome addition to United’s squad, with his explosive pace, athleticism and European experience making him an ideal long-term successor to Luke Shaw.
Barcelona are reportedly willing to consider offers in the region of €50 million (£42 million) for the La Masia graduate, with Balde’s contract running until 2028.
This summer is seen as the ideal window for the Catalan club to cash in and generate pure profit to help navigate strict La Liga salary caps and recoup some of the funds spent to acquire Anthony Gordon.
Despite the club’s willingness to sell, any deal will require significant persuasion, as the ‘fantastic’ Balde remains determined to stay and fight for his place under Hansi Flick.
