Barcelona centre-back Pau Cubarsi has made it clear that Marc-Andre ter Stegen remains the undisputed leader within the dressing room.
Amid recent speculation about the German goalkeeper’s status, especially following the arrival of Joan Garcia, Cubarsi has stepped forward to publicly back the club captain.
In recent days, debate has been brewing over whether Ter Stegen still commands the same level of influence within the squad. But Cubarsi shut down any doubts, strongly supporting his captain during an interview with TV3.
“We don’t decide anything. At the moment, Marc is part of the squad. He is our captain, the one who guides us and our main supporter. He’s with us, we’re very happy, and we hope he stays that way.”
Having started both of Barcelona’s pre-season matches in Japan and South Korea, the young defender remains grounded.
Despite his growing importance, he insists that nobody in the team can take their spot for granted. “You have to work at it every day.”

Discussing Hansi Flick’s approach, Cubarsi confirmed that the high-risk, high-reward tactics are here to stay, but with better balance. The team is determined to maintain its identity while learning from past mistakes.
“It may not be as exaggerated as last year, but we will maintain the style.”
Although he has worn the armband at the youth level, Cubarsi admitted he doesn’t yet see himself in a leadership role within the senior team.
“In youth football, I wore the captain’s armband. I have to improve my communication skills to gain leadership.”
Lastly, he also spoke fondly about his growing bond with Joan Garcia, the new goalkeeper.
“We share the call for the 2024 Olympic Games, we have things in common, we’re from the town. We have an affinity for this topic. He is a spectacular guy, and I like him a lot.”
