With FC Barcelona eyeing a new defensive signing for the summer of 2026, Bayern Munich mainstay Dayot Upamecano has emerged as one of the targets.

After all, the towering centre-back’s current deal with the Bavarian giants stands to expire at the end of the season, and there is no agreement over an extension so far.

The French international’s contract situation has made him an appealing commodity in the market, with a number of top clubs keeping an eye on him, including Barcelona.

Bayern chief confident about Upamecano renewal

However, Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has expressed confidence about Upamecano renewing his contract and remaining at the Allianz Arena beyond the current season.

“I’m optimistic to get new deal done,” Hainer told Sky Sport Germany, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

“I’m hearing that he’s extremely happy at Bayern, he feels incredibly comfortable in the team, and he also feels incredibly comfortable with the coach”, he added.

Upamecano has been in exceptional form this season for Bayern Munich, thriving in Vincent Kompany’s tactical setup.

The 27-year-old defender has featured in 15 of the Bavarian giants’ 17 matches across all competitions in 2025/26.

Also on the radar of Barcelona’s rivals, Real Madrid, Upamecano remains a key component in Bayern Munich’s plans for the present and the future.

And, judging by Hainer’s comments, there seems to be a sense of growing optimism that the player himself is happy and content with the Bundesliga champions and might end up signing an extension.

In that scenario, Barcelona have no shortage of alternatives, with Borussia Dortmund star Nico Schlotterbeck also on the club’s shortlist, along with Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace) and Goncalo Inacio (Sporting CP).
