Benfica considered signing Samu Costa, a recent Roberto Martínez call-up, but not this summer | OneFootball

According to Glorioso 1904, Benfica assessed a move for Mallorca midfielder Samu Costa, recently called up by Roberto Martínez for the 2026 World Cup, but any concrete interest dates to previous windows.

The club analysed the possibility at different points, especially in January 2025, viewing his physical and competitive profile as a useful option for midfield.

The process never advanced to decisive negotiations and then lost traction internally. Since then, the 25-year-old has consolidated his place at Mallorca, becoming one of the team’s key figures.

Although his name is again being linked to European sides around his World Cup involvement, he is not on Benfica’s shortlist for the summer window.

Valued at €15 million, he made 36 appearances in 2025/26 for Mallorca, 34 in La Liga and two in the Copa del Rey, totalling 2,810 minutes. He scored seven goals and provided two assists.
