Benfica’s financial vice-president Nuno Catarino says the Benfica District project is advancing positively, with approvals still pending, while stadium expansion plans have been adjusted.
According to Glorioso 1904, Catarino said the scheme has met each scheduled step and is under review by multiple municipal council departments and external bodies. He expressed confidence that progress is tracking expectations.
He said projected costs have seen natural adjustments, with some lines rising and others falling, but no material deviations at this stage. Benfica expects to secure the necessary approvals within one or two months, after which the project will be formally presented to members.
While administrative procedures have not always moved at the desired speed, he maintained the Benfica District remains fully active and on the original timetable. He also addressed Estádio da Luz expansion works, which were partly postponed due to the competitive calendar.
An earlier season start for Europa League qualifying shortened the window for construction, leading to fewer than 600 new seats in this phase. The aim is to lift capacity to around 69,000 this season, then surpass 70,000 in the following campaign.
