Sunderland have booked their place in the Championship play-off final thanks to a dramatic extra-time header from Dan Ballard that sealed victory over Coventry City.

Ballard’s effort, which went in off the underside of the crossbar during stoppage time, equalised the score on the night and clinched a 3-2 win on aggregate against the Sky Blues.

Truth be told, Frank Lampard's visitors dominated for large swathes of the contest, but when Sunderland looked to be holding out for penalties, Ballard headed home from a corner to secure their place at Wembley in the play-off final.

The thrilling finish capped off a tense evening at the Stadium of Light, where Ephron Mason-Clark had earlier struck in the 76th minute to force extra time.

The Black Cats will now face Sheffield United at Wembley on Saturday, 24 May, with a place in next season’s Premier League up for grabs.
