According to L'Équipe, Boca Juniors president Juan Roman Riquelme on Friday unveiled plans to lift La Bombonera’s capacity in Buenos Aires from 57,000 to 80,000.
The plan is framed as a response to River Plate, who said in late January that the Monumental would rise from 85,000 to 101,000 with a roof by 2029.
The La Bombonera project includes a fourth upper tier and two new seating zones replacing the current boxes, plus a partial roof. Four towers with lifts would carry supporters to the future fourth ring.
Riquelme rejected any relocation or nearby build, saying the stadium would not move and dismissing opposition ideas to shift the pitch 100 metres away.
Before his election in late 2023, he had considered negotiating with residents to buy homes behind the boxes to add a new stand. He now says 15 to 20 properties are protected by Buenos Aires’ heritage rules, making any south-side expansion impossible.
