Flamengo football director José Boto has defended the postponement of the Fla-Flu to 18:30 on Sunday at the Maracanã in matchweek 11 of the Brasileirão, responding to complaints from rivals.
"There has been a lot of confusion about something that should be normal. Some clubs cry about everything, they are professional whingers. Others spoke about what does not concern them," Boto told Flamengo TV.
The derby was initially scheduled for Saturday. Flamengo consulted Fluminense and both clubs wrote to the CBF after the Rubro-Negro’s return from Cusco, following their Conmebol Libertadores opener, took longer than expected.
Palmeiras, unhappy with the date change and with the lack of a suspensive effect for coach Abel Ferreira, will send letters to the CBF to question decisions and what it sees as different treatment between clubs.
Boto added that the switch protected players and improved the spectacle, saying the agreement was good for both sides and that an extra day would make the match better than it would have been a day earlier.
Fluminense coach Leonardo Jardim also supported the move before kick-off. "Both teams trained for an extra day, we went from two to three, Fluminense also benefited, rested players will return. It is about reducing injuries and delivering a better spectacle."
