After a long period with little progress, the elastic band has pinged back and things have suddenly started moving very quickly in terms of the Renato Veiga departure from Chelsea.

For a long time this summer it seemed like Atletico Madrid were going to sign him, but they eventually went with David Hancko. After that a number of clubs were mentioned, but none really seemed to put any money down on the table.

That changed last night, when Fabrizio Romano, Florian Plettenberg and others all started reporting that Villareal, of all teams, were now leading the race. Things developed rapidly overnight, and it seems like we’re close to a conclusion now.

Chelsea secure huge fee and sell on for versatile defender

Florian Plettenberg’s Tweet about the details of Renato Veiga’s move to Villareal.

Plettenberg has just Tweeted some exclusive details from the deal. Chelsea have managed to get the Yellow Submarine to pay €30m (if all the bonuses and clauses are completed), but crucially also have a monster 40% sell on clause.

That means this deal could potentially end up being a really big one if Veiga does well and moves to a top team. Given the Blues paid just €14m to Basel for him a year ago, that’s pretty good going.

It’s a piece of good scouting, a good loan and a quick flip for a major profit that potentially opens us up to sign another defender this summer.

Move could happen this week to open up Chelsea’s options

Plettenberg cites Romano from earlier today, saying that the Portugal international’s medical is scheduled for tomorrow, with his personal terms agreed on Monday.

It looks like just a few days until we can tick another major deal off the list. It seems the plan is still to sell an attacker before moving for Xavi Simons, but this is still handy.
