Marseille have appointed Bruno Genesio as head coach, less than 24 hours after Habib Beye’s exit, their 12th since Frank McCourt bought the club in October 2016.

Le Progres reports that DNCG and UEFA oversight, plus contract talks around the outgoing coach, delayed an appointment trailed for weeks.

Genesio links up with president Stéphane Richard, the former Orange chief who formally starts on Thursday, and sporting director Grégory Lorenzi to front a calmer, more rigorous era. OM had lagged on setting pre-season but can now plan.

Finances are in the red, UEFA has sanctioned the club while keeping it in the Europa League, and the DNCG will police summer transfers and the wage bill. After finishing fifth, a tighter approach was already envisaged as the Richard-Lorenzi-Genesio trio seek to draw a line under recent turbulence under Pablo Longoria, Medhi Benatia and Roberto De Zerbi.

Genesio, 59, takes on a more French, Ligue 1 focused project and is tasked with a rebuild. He previously led Lyon from 2015 to 2019, Rennes from 2021 to 2023 and Lille from 2024 to 2026.

At Lille his first season ended fifth with a standout Champions League run featuring wins over Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid, then he finished third this season ahead of OL and OM. A former Martigues player near the Vélodrome, he has shown at Rennes and Lille he can nudge squads above expectations. Marseille would welcome a repeat.
