Sunday’s derby between Corinthians and Palmeiras at 20:30, at Neo Química Arena, marks a symbolic moment for goalkeeper Carlos Miguel. It will be his first start against his former club since leaving.
According to Nosso Palestra, since he joined Palmeiras this will be only his second visit to the Corinthians ground. The previous trip came in August last year in the Brasileiro, when he remained on the bench and Weverton started.
Carlos Miguel played for Corinthians from 2021 to 2024. Signed as Cássio’s understudy, he had a sustained run as first choice only in 2024 after Cássio departed for Cruzeiro. He made 14 consecutive appearances before moving to Nottingham Forest in England, a switch that displeased part of the fanbase, and totalled 26 games for the club.
After his spell abroad, the 27-year-old returned to Brazil in 2025, joining Palmeiras for about €5.5 million, roughly R$ 35 million. Initially depth, he took the gloves in October after Weverton injured his hand and was later sold to Grêmio.
Standing 2.05 metres, he is now Abel Ferreira’s preferred option and approaches a clássico that promises to be tense. In the only previous Palmeiras v Corinthians meeting with him in the squad, in October, the warm-up turned heated as Corinthians fans booed and abused him, shouting “frangueiro”, while current starter Hugo Souza was applauded.
