Lazio Women have been ordered to pay former player Maja Gothberg more than €69,000. The Court of Arbitration for Sport found the club unlawfully ended her employment because she was pregnant.
FIFPro said the “groundbreaking” ruling “establishes an important precedent around the confidentiality of pregnancy-related medical information” in the women’s game.
Gothberg disclosed her pregnancy in summer 2024. Lazio had negotiated a new deal for 2024-25, but it was never signed. She argued the club pulled out because of the pregnancy, and CAS found in her favour.
Lazio contended her failure to travel meant she had withdrawn from the proposed contract. CAS also rejected the claim that her agent was in talks with Parma, citing messages sent to the Stadio Tardini club stating they were not available.
The panel considered a binding agreement to have existed before the pregnancy was disclosed. It was the first time the CAS had awarded compensation to a player for unlawfully ending an employment relationship due to pregnancy.
