Former Lazio goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi could soon make his return to Formello to work alongside Gennaro Gattuso.
The 56-year-old signed for the Aquile in 2000 and swiftly became a fan favorite at the Stadio Olimpico. In 2007, the Italian put an end to an elusive playing career, but he eventually returned to Lazio in 2016, assuming the role of team coordinator. The Viterbo native spent five years in this post before leaving the club due to disagreements with then-sporting director Igle Tare.
According to several reports in the Italian media, Peruzzi is currently in talks with the Lazio management over a possible return. Il Messaggero believes he could be appointed as a technical director, operating as a liaison between the new head, Gattuso, and sporting director Angelo Fabiani. He would have a say in both technical decisions and dressing-room dynamics.
Gattuso would reportedly be delighted with Peruzzi’s return. The two men share a good rapport dating back to their time together in the Italian national team. They were both members of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad.
Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) adds that club president Claudio Lotito already held a meeting with the former goalkeeper at Villa San Sebastiano last week. While the two parties have yet to finalize their agreement, the Roman newspaper believes they have approached the finish line.
During his playing stint, Peruzzi made 226 appearances for Lazio, conceding 242 goals and registering 66 clean sheets.
