Celik made a promise to Gian Piero Gasperini: “I’m staying at Roma.”
The Turkish full-back is eager to play in the Champions League with the Giallorossi after a challenging season that saw the team finish third and qualify for the Champions League.
The former Lille player, however, is out of contract and has yet to reach an agreement with the Giallorossi regarding a possible extension.
On the flight back from Verona, the Grugliasco-born coach is said to have approached Celik and asked him a question: “What have you decided to do?”
As reported by Corriere dello Sport, the full-back responded: “I want to play in the Champions League with you. I’m staying in Rome.”
This is where the agreement between the parties stems from, with Celik’s agents working to reach an agreement and have their client sign a new contract.
Contacts between Celik’s agents and Roma have resumed.
It appears the details are being ironed out for the long-awaited deal: the contract, which expires in June, is worth more than €2 million and can be revised upwards without exceeding the €2.5-€3 million threshold. While waiting for the final agreement, Celik’s promise to Gasperini is an act of love that preceded the signing.
