According to Sky Sports (13.47), the Glasgow outfit are seeking a loan move for the Dutchman amid uncertainty over his Elland Road future.

The Whites share an ownership with Old Firm rivals Rangers, which could complicate matters regarding Celtic’s interest in the striker.

Martin O’Neill is keen to bolster the team’s attacking options following his return to the club as manager in recent weeks.

The Premiership side are looking to regain ground in the title race, with the team sitting second in the table and six points adrift of leaders Hearts.

Celtic have reportedly held talks with Leeds in an attempt to sign Piroe on loan this January.

It was claimed earlier this week that Middlesbrough have their eye on the 26-year-old, who has made just 10 appearances in the top flight so far this season.

It’s believed that Celtic are willing to meet the player’s wage expectations, but a permanent exit would be preferred by the Premier League side in order to aid their compliance with the division’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Leeds are open to a permanent exit, but their stance regarding a loan is unclear and their relationship to Rangers through 49ers Enterprises could complicate talks.

The Whites are not willing to force the player out, with Piroe yet to come forward and ask for a departure from the Yorkshire outfit.

A sale to Middlesbrough may be preferable at this stage compared to Celtic due to these behind the scenes complications.

Boro are currently second in the Championship table, and are fighting for automatic promotion to the top flight.

Kim Hellberg’s side have played a game more than third place Ipswich Town, who are two points behind.

Joel Piroe is in control of his Leeds future amid Celtic and Middlesbrough interest

Leeds being unwilling to push Piroe out the door means he is in control of his future at Elland Road for now.

The forward has a contract until the summer of 2027, so a sale could make a lot of sense for the Whites this month as he still retains some transfer value.

He would also be a threatening option for Middlesbrough to have in their push for promotion, so it’s no surprise that they’re eyeing a deal.

If the connection to 49ers Enterprises proves an issue, then that should give the Championship side the edge in the race for his signature, if he does leave in January.
