César Tárrega has been diagnosed with a sprain in his left knee and will be out for around two to three weeks. According to Superdeporte, the Valencia centre-back underwent tests on Monday after fears of a more serious problem during the return from Madrid.
There is no damage to the ligaments or meniscus, scans ruled out a major issue in the left knee. The club plans to issue a medical update later on Monday.
Tárrega will miss LaLiga matches against Espanyol and Betis. Depending on his recovery, the plan is for him to try to make the Copa del Rey quarter-final against Athletic Club on four February and the LaLiga meeting with Real Madrid on eight February.
The setback leaves Carlos Corberán short at the back and increases the urgency to sign a centre-back this week.
Valencia are stretched in central defence, with Mouctar Diakhaby and Tárrega injured and Eray Cömert carrying a knock that kept him out at Getafe despite being on the bench. Copete is the only fully fit option, and he is one caution from suspension with four yellow cards.
