Charlotte FC head coach Dean Smith has confirmed the MLS club’s interest in Aston Villa midfielder Harvey Elliott (22), as uncertainty continues to surround the England international’s short-term future, Sky Sports reports.

Elliott joined Villa on loan from Liverpool last summer in a deal that included an obligation to buy if a set number of appearances were reached. However, the 22-year-old has featured just five times in all competitions, leaving that clause increasingly unlikely to be triggered.

Smith, who managed Villa between 2018 and 2021, revealed he raised the possibility of a move during a recent visit to the Midlands over the Christmas period. Speaking to Sky Sports News, the former England boss said Elliott’s lack of minutes had prompted discussions over a potential switch to Major League Soccer.

Smith suggested Charlotte could offer Elliott valuable game time ahead of the World Cup, with the midfielder currently on the fringes under Unai Emery. Earlier this month, Emery acknowledged Villa had already decided against making the move permanent, citing doubts over committing significant funds to the transfer.

With limited opportunities at Villa and no clear pathway back into Liverpool’s plans, Elliott faces a pivotal period in his career. The opening of the MLS transfer window on 26 January presents Charlotte with a timely opportunity to act, while Elliott weighs the prospect of regular football against remaining in Europe.
