Charlton have revealed a major change to the matchday experience at The Valley, and it's causing division amongst fans.
Charlton Athletic have revealed their 'new and improved' big screen at The Valley, with the feature receiving mixed reviews from Addicks supporters.
The home of Charlton Athletic since 1919, The Valley is truly one of English football's most iconic and historic footballing amphitheatres.
Having played host to Premier League football from the late 90s to the mid-2000s, the Addicks have only played League One and Championship football since 2007.
However, now under the management of Nathan Jones, Charlton are once again a club on the rise, and dreams of a return to the top-flight are no longer far-fetched for Addicks fans.
In what is perhaps a visual metaphor for the positive mood around the club and the forward-planning for potentially even brighter days ahead, Charlton have made a big renovation to a certain part of The Valley.
For many years, Charlton have had a modest-sized jumbotron LED screen sandwiched between the Alan Curbishley Stand and the Jimmy Seed Stand (which is the away end), and that isn't going to change.
What is going to change, however, is the size of said screen, as Charlton have showcased in a video released to their social media platforms on Friday, with help from Addicks icon Mark Fish.
The club have also announced that alongside the new big screen, new LED digiboards will also be installed on all four sides of the pitch, with all these new improvements making their debuts when Charlton welcome Sheffield Wednesday to The Valley on 18 October.
However, it's fair to say that the new version of the screen has been getting mixed reviews from supporters.
"Mmmm, hope it’s a bit taller. Great to see Mark Fishhhhhh," one fan commented.
"Like the screen but why is quarter of it in the away end?" questioned another Addicks supporter.
"Only Charlton could attempt to upgrade something and make it look worse. A TV designed for nothing more than displaying sponsors," wrote one disappointed Addicks supporter.
"Not quite what any of us were expecting...is it in its final position yet, or still to be fully aligned? Very odd at the moment," said another.
"Feels a bit like the club have oversold it," wrote yet another underwhelmed Addicks fan.
Not all Charlton supporters are unhappy with how the new big screen looks at The Valley, however.
"Quality in terms of picture looks brilliant, but looks like it needs to be moved to the left and made taller," said one Charlton fan.
"Can the screen show a scoreline of 4-0 to the home team? That’s all that matters," joked another Addicks supporter.
"Loving the promo #cafc. Going to be interesting if you are going to keep the teamsheets on there. If not r.i.p. I will take what you have done over renaming the stadium, any day of the week," said another content Charlton fan.
One Charlton supporter simply wrote: "Love it!"
Regardless of your opinion on how the new screen looks visually, Charlton fans will surely agree that it's a physical sign of the club's hierarchy taking a keen and strong interest in improving many different facets of the club, investing into the project both on and off the pitch.
