Chelsea could revive their long-standing interest in AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan this summer, according to Calciomercato.

The Blues are expected to bring a new goalkeeper to Stamford Bridge and could turn to the France international whose future looks uncertain.

Milan risk losing Maignan, who kept 13 clean sheets in 37 Serie A appearances last season, despite earlier agreeing terms on a contract extension.

While Maignan was expected to commit his long-term future to Milan, concerns over the club’s direction have cast fresh doubt over his future.

The 30-year-old is disappointed by developments behind the scenes, particularly the departures of influential figures who played a key role in convincing him to stay.

Chelsea made a concerted effort to sign Maignan during the previous transfer window, but Milan viewed their €15 million offer as a lowball.

That failed pursuit now appears to be back on the agenda for Chelsea.

Unless Milan can demonstrate significant ambition through high-profile appointments in the boardroom and dugout, Maignan could opt for a new challenge in London.

Maignan would be a significant upgrade on Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen for Chelsea.

While Sanchez has shown flashes of quality, inconsistency and costly errors have undermined confidence in his ability to be a long-term number one.

Jorgensen has been a flop at Chelsea and needs a new environment to develop.

Maignan would provide leadership, authority and a proven track record at the highest level. He is one of Europe’s most respected goalkeepers and a player capable of delivering in decisive moments.

His arrival would also create the ideal environment for highly-rated youngster Mike Penders.

Rather than being thrown into the spotlight, the Belgian prospect could learn from one of the game’s most accomplished goalkeepers before eventually taking the reins.
