Chelsea talent Jessy Derry is close to joining Portuguese giants Sporting CP on a season-long loan.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Sporting have agreed to cover his salary with no buy option included, which suggests the move is to prioritise the young winger’s development.

Before heading to Portugal, the 19-year-old has committed his future to Chelsea by signing a new six-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032.

He’s regarded as one of the Blues’ brightest talents and will hope he can do enough to earn a spot in the first team when he returns at the end of the season.

Derry came into the first team with plenty of fanfare following his impressive performances in the Chelsea academy.

He finally made his Premier League debut against Nottingham Forest in May and caught the eye with his nimble footwork and fearlessness in running at defenders.

However, his afternoon was unfortunately cut short when he suffered a concussion after a heavy clash of heads with Forest defender Zach Abbott.

Derry was taken off on a stretcher before half-time, but he has since made a full recovery.

Chelsea now believe regular first-team football is the next step in his progress, and Sporting CP offers the perfect opportunity.

The Portuguese side finished second in the league last season, making it into the Champions League qualifiers. That would give Derry a chance to get valuable experience in Europe’s premier tournament.

Sporting have a strong reputation for developing young players, making them an attractive destination for one of Chelsea’s highly rated prospects.

The two clubs also have a positive working relationship, especially after Chelsea’s recent shopping spree that brought Dario Essugo and Geovany Quenda to West London.

Quenda’s move to Chelsea opens up space on the flank that Derry will be keen to fill for Sporting, giving him a genuine chance at competing for regular minutes.

Derry will be the latest Chelsea academy star to jump ship after .
