Italian did not face the media after draw with Bournemouth

Chelsea’s assistant coach Willy Caballero says he does not know whether Enzo Maresca will have recovered from illness in time to take charge of the Blues for Sunday’s Premier League clash at Manchester City.

Maresca was on the touchline for the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night but asked his assistant Caballero to conduct his post-match media duties when they spoke in the dressing room after the game, because he felt unwell.

Chelsea’s failure to win against the Cherries left them 15 points off top-of-the-league Arsenal and with just one win in their last seven league games.

After the match, Caballero was asked for an update on Maresca’s health.

“Yes, he [Maresca] didn't feel well the last two days,” Caballero said.

“He had a bit of a temperature two days ago.

“He did the last two sessions because he wanted to prepare the team well for this game, but after the game he went to the changing room and he asked me to replace him because he didn't feel well.

“That's the only thing I can tell you guys.”

The west Londoners’ next match sees them face second-placed Man City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday evening, as Maresca’s team look to begin 2026 as they mean to go on.

Asked whether the Blues’ boss would be well enough to take charge of that game, Caballero replied: “I don't know. I just want to wish for the recovery of Enzo and I believe in one or two days he will be okay.”
