Chelsea will be managed by their under 21 manager Calum McFarlane tomorrow when they face Man City, and what was really disgraceful about the whole situation was that the young coach was asked to take the first press conference after the sacking of Enzo Maresca.

The sporting directors who keep making bad decisions and keep digging Chelsea deeper into a hole don’t even have the stones to stand up there and take questions, instead leaving it to someone totally unqualified to go up and take all the heat from a packed press conference.

The journalists there basically just mocked him for half of the presser, including poking fun at whether the players actually knew who we was, and even asking whether McFarlane’s electronic pass allowed him entry to the men’s facility at Cobham.

Even more painfully, the coach answered sincerely:

“It did [let me in], yes. It got changed to let me in. In all honesty, it’s exactly the same as wherever you work. We’re all in it for the same reason. We all love football and we’re here to support them. Training was really good today. There was a really good energy. The lads have been brilliant. The staff at the club have been brilliant. You can’t ask for any more.”

He now has to stand on the touchline and manage a team against Pep Guardiola’s Man City away.

In other news…

Enzo Maresca’s departure means Chelsea are looking for a 5th permanent manager in the BlueCo era. The sporting directors have made another bad appointment, and are surely under pressure now.

There were countless issues behind the removal of Maresca, but ultimately it was the bad results which turned the situation critical. Wins can paper over a lot of cracks, dropped points make small issues a lot bigger.
