For the first time in Clásico Nacional history, Chivas and América met on Valentine’s Day. When Mexico’s fiercest rivalry lands on a date supposedly reserved for love, romance doesn’t stand a chance. This wasn’t just a battle between the country’s two most successful clubs; it was a test of loyalty in households split in their support.
That wasn’t the only milestone achieved this weekend. It was also the first time in 11 years the two sides would meet with Chivas at the top of the table.
In recent years, the Clásico has been dominated by Las Águilas. Prior to the previous clash in September 2025, América won three of the last five meetings.
It’s not just the head-to-head record that tilts in América’s favour. The Mexico City giants have owned this era of Liga MX, lifting three consecutive titles and stretching their lead to four more league trophies than their fiercest rivals.
Heading into the match, Club América hold the head-to-head advantage, winning 82 of the 221 games before, while Chivas were chasing a 70th.
This time around, in Guadalajara, Chivas took advantage of their home support and forced goalkeeper Luis Malagón into action from the start.
The game was decided by a single goal, scored by in-form striker, Armando ‘Hormiga’ González.
González was on-hand to dispatch from a corner, flicked on by Diego Campillo.
América tried to fight back, but goals have been hard to come by for André Jardine’s men in 2026, having scored the fewest amount of any Liga MX side in the Clausura. Chivas dominated the stats sheet, registering double América’s efforts in shots on target, total shots, corner kicks and yellow cards.
As full-time blew, history was made as a young Rojiblancos made it back-to-back wins against their América for the first time since 2020.
Three points for Chivas keeps them at the top of the Clausura table as the only side with a 100% record after six matches.
While their record will cause fear for the rest of the league, none will be more concerned than América, who seem a farcry from their recent selves, who controlled both the Clásico and Mexican football.
