Charlton Athletic striker Chuks Aneke will hope that he can deliver a parting gift to the supporters between now and the end of the season.

The 31-year-old is set to be out of contract in the summer, and given that his injury record means he has strictly been used as an impact substitute by Nathan Jones in League One this season, it seems unlikely that he will be offered fresh terms before his existing deal comes to an end.

However, with the Addicks currently in the midst of a promotion push in the third tier, Aneke will no doubt get several opportunities to make an impact from the bench, and a key goal during the run-in could be the ideal parting gift to the Charlton supporters, especially if it helps the club secure a return to the Championship.

Aneke's only goal so far this season was an impressive late equaliser against Rotherham United at The Valley back in September, and while he has also provided a few assists from the bench over the course of the campaign, he will definitely want to add to his goal tally before the end of the 2024/25 season.

Charlton have six regular league fixtures remaining, as well as the potential for a few play-off games for Aneke to find the back of the net again in a Charlton shirt, but he will need to improve his record in front of goal if he is going to get that moment he is desperate for.

Aneke must improve in front of goal

It has been clear to see that Aneke is desperate to get back on the scoresheet for Charlton during his cameo appearances from the bench in recent weeks.

The striker thought he had ended his goal drought during Charlton's win against Huddersfield Town last weekend, only to be denied by the linesman's flag after he had slotted the ball past goalkeeper Lee Nicholls.

He managed to make an impact during the Addicks' trip to Mansfield Town in midweek, as he provided an assist for Tyreece Campbell to fire home the winning goal 15 minutes from time, before he almost found the target himself with a powerful long-range effort in the closing stages.

However, the stats suggest that Aneke must improve in front of goal if he is going to score for Charlton between now and the end of the season.

According to FotMob, no player in League One has averaged more shots per 90 minutes than Aneke so far this season, which backs up that he desperately wants to score, but also suggests that he could do with improving his end product.

A shot conversion rate of 2.9% further suggests that Aneke is someway away from finding that elusive goal, but if he can continue to get into the right positions to get shots away during his remaining appearances for Charlton, there is no reason why he cannot pop up with a big goal that could prove to be decisive in the Addicks' promotion push.

Aneke has proven that he can score goals for Charlton

Aneke has shown that he is a player with an excellent mentality by coming back from injuries time and again, so he will no doubt have plenty of belief that he will be able to score one or two big goals before his contract expires.

He netted 15 goals for Charlton in League One during the 2020/21 season, and if he can recreate that kind of form during the coming weeks, it would be no surprise if he delivers a parting gift to the Charlton supporters in the form of a key goal in the League One promotion race.
