CAF has retrospectively awarded Morocco a 3-0 win in the Africa Cup of Nations final, overturning Senegal’s 1-0 extra-time victory, and Senegal will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

According to L’Equipe, a Senegal official said they were outraged and that the 29 March CAF Executive Committee meeting would be explosive.

In stoppage time of the final, hosts Morocco were given a controversial penalty. Before it was taken, Senegal’s players left the pitch in protest, leading to a delay of nearly 20 minutes. Brahim Diaz had his Panenka saved, then four minutes into extra time Villarreal’s Pape Gueye smashed in the winner.

CAF cited articles 82 and 84 of its regulations, which treat leaving the pitch before the end without the referee’s permission as a forfeit. Ismael Saibari was fined €44k and the Moroccan federation €139k for incidents linked to the final.

The news filtered through during the Champions League Round of 16. Brahim, on Real Madrid’s bench at the Etihad after their 5-1 aggregate win over Manchester City, appeared pleased but surprised as he learned of the decision.

Senegal midfielder Pathe Ciss posted on social media alongside images of the celebrations, writing that three more goals could be added in favour of the crybaby.
