Chelsea forward Cole Palmer admits his World Cup snub has given him extra motivation going into the new season.

Palmer was a surprise omission from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad which reached the semi-finals before losing to Argentina.

Instead, the 24-year-old watched the World Cup while on a summer holiday with his family in Marbella.

Asked if his omission gave him more motivation ahead of the new Premier League campaign, Palmer told reporters in Sydney: “Yes, naturally it’s going to.

“It’s like anything. If someone tells you you’re essentially not good enough to get in the squad, then you’re going to think, ‘all right then, I’m going to try to go that extra bit harder’.”

Palmer played the majority of last season with a groin injury which affected his form and possibly cost him his World Cup spot.

But he added: “I feel good now. The seven weeks (off) obviously helped. I’m ready to go again.”

Palmer came off the bench for Chelsea’s pre-season opener, a 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers, in which he provided an assist for Joao Pedro’s 85th-minute strike.

He will face familiar opposition on Saturday as Chelsea clash with London rivals Tottenham.
