Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola will step down this summer, bringing one of English football’s defining managerial reigns towards a major conclusion.
Guardiola has spent 10 years at Manchester City, winning 20 trophies and reshaping expectations around the club, the Premier League and elite coaching. His period in charge has been marked by domestic dominance, tactical innovation and a sustained level of performance few managers have matched.
City’s hierarchy have long valued Guardiola not only as a coach, but as a central figure in the club’s wider football identity. His departure from the dugout will therefore represent a significant sporting shift, even for an organisation built on long term planning and structural stability.
The focus will now turn to succession planning, with Manchester City expected to approach the next appointment with the same level of detail that has defined much of their modern era.
Former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca is expected to be the leading candidate.
Guardiola will continue his relationship with the club through City Football Group, taking up a role as Global Ambassador.
That position will see him provide technical advice to clubs within the group, while also working on specific projects and collaborations. It ensures his influence remains connected to the wider City network, even after his time as Manchester City head coach comes to an end.
Guardiola’s Manchester City legacy is already secure. Twenty trophies across a decade reflects dominance, but his impact goes beyond silverware. He has altered how City play, how opponents prepare for them and how success is measured at the top of English football.
For Manchester City, this summer will mark the close of an extraordinary chapter. For Pep Guardiola, it opens a new role within a football structure he helped elevate.
