Corinthians aim to win their first derby of the season after three years

With one win and one loss in two games this season, Corinthians will face their first derby of 2026. On the afternoon of this Sunday (18), the Majestoso, against São Paulo, will take place at Neo Química Arena, starting at 4:00 PM (Brasília time), with Timão looking to win their first traditional clash of the season after three years.

The last time Corinthians won their first derby of the season was in 2023, when Fernando Lázaro was the team's coach. The match was precisely against São Paulo, with a 2-1 victory, but at the Cícero Pompeu de Toledo Stadium, Morumbi. Both goals for the black-and-white team were scored by Adson, a product of the club’s youth academy.

Since then, there have been two seasons in which Corinthians did not know what it was like to win the first derby of the year. In 2024, there was another meeting with São Paulo, this time at Neo Química Arena. The People’s Team had a player sent off and was defeated by their rival, breaking a ten-year streak without Tricolor Paulista winning in Itaquera.

Last year, 2025, the first derby of the season was also a Majestoso, again at Morumbis, just like in 2023. However, this time Corinthians could not put on a great performance and were defeated 3-1. José Martínez scored a beautiful goal, but the rival was superior throughout the 90 minutes and scored with Oscar and Lucas Moura, twice.

For this year, the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF) has once again decided to schedule the first derby for both teams as a Majestoso. The expectation is for a packed stadium to support Timão, with Dorival Júnior likely fielding the starting lineup after resting the team in the loss to Bragantino.
