Matheus Pereira return keeps Corinthians’ curious champions tradition

Corinthians have signed midfielder Matheus Pereira, the club announced. His return preserves a curious tradition that began in 1990, having at least one Brazilian champion in the squad.

Since the first national crown in 1990, there has always been at least one player who has won the league with Corinthians. With Maycon and Romero departing, that streak would have ended, but Pereira appeared in one match in the 2015 campaign and is therefore a champion.

The only season without such a player was 2005, a gap closed when the team won the title that year, making the entire squad champions. Earlier examples include Ronaldo Giovanelli, champion in 1990 and in the squad until 1998, Cássio from 2015 to 2024, and in 2025 Maycon and Romero.

The seven-time Brazilian champions enjoyed a prolific 2010s. With the last national title in 2017, keeping the streak has become trickier as that group moves on, which makes Pereira a rare member of the 2015 side still active.

Pereira joins on a one-year loan with an option to buy at the end of the deal. Despite Fortaleza’s relegation, he was among their standout performers. A Corinthians academy graduate, he later played in Italy with Juventus and Empoli, in France with Bordeaux and in Spain with Barcelona and Eibar before returning to Brazil.
