Corinthians reached the Copa do Brasil last 16 with a 1-0 win over Barra on Thursday at Neo Química Arena, as Fernando Diniz started Fabrizio Angileri ahead of Matheus Bidu at left-back. According to Meu Timao, the coach later outlined the contrasts between the pair.
Angileri was withdrawn 12 minutes into the second half for Bidu, with Diniz saying the game required Bidu’s profile on the flank.
Diniz stressed the two play the same role in different ways. He rejected the idea that Angileri is purely defensive, pointing to his quality in possession, and noted the Argentine lacked rhythm, while Bidu’s understanding with team-mates also counted.
He described Angileri as someone who builds from deeper, bringing height, defensive work and pace to hit the byline. Bidu, he said, tends to start higher, excels in tight spaces and can pick unusual passes.
Since Diniz arrived in early April, Angileri has featured in three of 11 matches, his previous outing on 26 April when he came on at 44 minutes of the second half in a 1-0 league win over Vasco in Itaquera.
Angileri joined in early 2025 at Ramón Díaz’s request and initially claimed the spot, but Bidu regained it, particularly after Dorival Júnior’s arrival, and kept the starting berth under Diniz, even harbouring hopes of the Brazil national team.
The staff must now decide who starts on Sunday, when Corinthians face Botafogo at 16:00 at Estádio Nilton Santos in the 16th round of the Brasileirão.
