Corinthians midfielder breaks record in draw with Cruzeiro in final

On the morning of this Sunday, the 7th, Corinthians began their quest for a seventh title in the Brazilian Women's Championship. In a match held at Arena Independência, in Belo Horizonte, against Cruzeiro, the Brabas took the lead twice but allowed the equalizer both times, with the final score ending at 2-2. The goals for the alvinegras were scored by Gi Fernandes and Gabi Zanotti.

Right after the end of the match, midfielder Gi Fernandes spoke to the press in the mixed zone. She celebrated her goal and the draw achieved away from home, also explaining why she is wearing Corinthians’ number 23 jersey: “It was left for me, so I chose it. And I saw that it’s (Michael) Jordan’s number, right? So now I keep wearing 23, it’s Gi Fernandes 23 forever”, she said, laughing.

She also stated that although she scored a goal this Sunday, she wasn’t entirely happy with her overall performance. “We want more, we always want to win. I’m very happy to have scored the goal, but I’m a bit uneasy because my game wasn’t that good. But we’ll train, we’ll work so we can play a good game in the return leg”, declared the midfielder.

Finally, Gi Fernandes showed confidence for the second leg of the final, though she emphasized Cruzeiro’s quality: “More confident, yes, but we have to know that Cruzeiro is a very good team, we can’t slip up, they are a very qualified team.”

It’s worth noting that this Sunday was special for the athlete, as she broke her record for most games played in a single season, reaching 23 matches. Previously, the highest number of times Gi Fernandes had taken the field in a single year was in 2023, when she played for Santos on 22 occasions.

She will have the chance to increase this record next Sunday, the 14th, when the Brabas face Cruzeiro again in the second leg of the Brasileirão final. The match will once again be at 10:30 a.m. (Brasília time), this time at Neo Química Arena. Corinthians have already won the competition six times, in the years 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.
