Corinthians scramble to fix Memphis payment row

According to UOL, Corinthians are working to resolve payment issues with Memphis Depay after the player’s lawyers sent two formal notices to the club demanding roughly R$6.1 million in outstanding wages and prize-related bonuses. The club has already cleared its debt over image rights, a process delayed because Memphis—according to Corinthians—had not yet issued the necessary invoice, which led to a brief administrative holdup. Current negotiations are now focused on settling about R$4 million that remains unpaid, primarily for performance-related bonuses.

Fabinho Soldado, an executive at Corinthians, held discussions with Memphis about the notices sent by the player’s legal team. During the conversation, Memphis claimed he was unaware his lawyers had formally approached the club to demand the payments. Despite the miscommunication, both parties appear intent on reaching an agreement. The club has scheduled a meeting at the Joaquim Grava training facility, where they intend to present a proposal to Memphis to pay the remaining debt in installments.

The situation highlights the financial pressures currently facing Corinthians, who, like many Brazilian clubs, have struggled with cash flow and payment timelines. Corinthians leadership maintains that the club has acted in good faith regarding the salary obligations and is seeking to resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiation.

Memphis is set to rejoin the squad following the meeting—pending agreement over payments—illustrating a willingness on both sides to work towards an amicable solution. For the moment, Corinthians aims to restore normality within the squad while addressing their broader financial challenges.
