Corinthians waste chances, Flamengo come from behind in Brasileirão

Corinthians returned to the field for the Brazilian Championship on the night of this Sunday, the 28th, hosting Flamengo at the Neo Química Arena in a match valid for the 25th round of the competition. After squandering offensive opportunities in the first half, including a missed penalty by Yuri Alberto, the Alvinegro opened the scoring early in the second half with the number 9, but ended up conceding a comeback, losing 2-1.

With the result, Corinthians remains with the same 29 points as before, now totaling seven wins, eight draws, and ten losses in the tournament, along with 25 goals scored and 31 conceded. Thanks to other results in the round, the team now occupies the 12th position in the standings, increasing the distance to the G-6 to 11 points.

Corinthians' Lineup and Absences

The Corinthians coaching staff could not count on the following players for the match: André Ramalho (strain in the right thigh muscle), André Carrilo (ligament injury in the left ankle), Charles (treatment for pain in the right knee), Memphis (edema in the right thigh muscle), and Rodrigo Garro (muscle injury in the right calf).

Given this, coach Dorival Júnior fielded the following team to start the match: Hugo Souza; Matheuzinho, João Pedro, Gustavo Henrique, and Matheus Bidu; Raniele, José Martínez, Maycon, and Breno Bidon; Gui Negão and Yuri Alberto. The bench options included: Felipe Longo, Félix Torres, Romero, Cacá, Fabrizio Angileri, Vitinho, Kayke, Ryan, Talles Magno, Hugo, André, and Dieguinho.

Flamengo's Lineup

Coach Filipe Luís sent to the field: Rossi; Emerson Royal, Léo Ortiz, Léo Pereira, and Viña; De La Cruz, Saúl, Arrascaeta, and Carrascal; Samuel Lino and Bruno Henrique.

Refereeing

The referee was Wilton Pereira Sampaio, assisted by Bruno Raphael Pires and Bruno Boschilia. The VAR was managed by Wagner Reway.

First Half

Corinthians started the game under pressure, and saw Flamengo create the first attack, with a ball lifted into the area by Arrascaeta which the defense cleared without trouble. Following that, a counterattack by the Alvinegro resulted in a corner, but the Flamengo defense deflected the attempt, leaving no chance for a finish. The Timão continued attacking and, with another corner, once again failed to conclude.

At five minutes, Timão again reached Flamengo's area dangerously: Raniele attempted a long pass from the defense, finding Matheuzinho at the edge of the area. The full-back controlled and shot powerfully, but off-target, sending the ball over Rossi's goal. Three minutes later, Martínez advanced to the midfield, passing to Bidon, who shot into the defense.

The People's Team kept attacking: at ten minutes, Matheus Bidu launched Yuri Alberto, who controlled and shot low, taking Rossi out of the play, but the ball hit the post. On the rebound, Breno Bidon was brought down in the area by Léo Pereira and the referee awarded a penalty – but in the kick, Yuri Alberto attempted a chip shot, which was too weak, allowing Rossi to save it, even while already on the ground.

At 16 minutes, Corinthians returned to the attack: Matheus Bidu crossed from the left, but the red-black defense cleared. Shortly after, Maycon threatened with a shot from outside the area, with the ball grazing Rossi's left post.

Timão kept pressing, with Yuri Alberto missing two more clear chances to score. At 24, he received a through pass, faced Rossi one-on-one, and shot powerfully, but the Flamengo goalkeeper made a great save. Minutes later, the forward invaded the area again and shot, but was blocked, resulting in a corner. On the corner, Gustavo Henrique headed, requiring another intervention from Rossi.

Flamengo, in turn, balanced the actions in the final minutes of the first half, mainly led by Arrascaeta. The team's best chance came at 43 minutes, after a quick play, where the midfielder exchanged passes with Samuel Lino and shot powerfully, but the ball went wide.

Flamengo's pressure continued in stoppage time, with the team creating another chance through Samuel Lino, deflected by João Pedro for a corner. Next, Emerson Royal, in a good position at the edge of the area, shot wide after an assist from Bruno Henrique. Finally, at 49, the referee ended the first half, with Corinthians and Flamengo tied 0-0.

Second Half

The final stage began with Flamengo pressing, but it was Corinthians who opened the scoring: just two minutes in, Yuri Alberto received a pass from Gui Negão at speed, left defender Léo Ortiz behind, invaded the area, and shot powerfully to beat Rossi: Corinthians 1-0!

Flamengo's equalizer didn't take long. At 9 minutes, Samuel Lino served Carrascal inside the area, who, with almost no angle, found Arrascaeta. The Uruguayan, with minimal space, finished in the corner, leaving Hugo Souza no chance.

The game remained open, with chances for both sides. Flamengo threatened again at 14, when Arrascaeta attempted a shot after a free-kick rebound, with the ball passing dangerously close to the post. On the other side, at 20, Gui Negão received a pass from Maycon and shot dangerously, but missed the target.

At 22, Bruno Henrique threatened for the visitors, after passing the defense and crossing low into the area – but the ball passed by Arrascaeta, without anyone managing the final touch. Following this, coach Dorival Júnior made his first changes for the Alvinegro, bringing in Talles Magno and Angileri in place of Gui Negão and Martínez.

However, Flamengo remained dangerous. At 28, Samuel Lino attempted a long-distance shot that, after a deflection, went out for a corner. On the corner, the ball fell to Arrascaeta at the edge of the area, the Uruguayan midfielder shot dangerously, but wide.

In response, Corinthians attacked with Matheus Bidu, who received on the left, tricked the defense with a dribble, and crossed low into the area, where the red-black defense managed to clear the danger.

The visitors returned to attack at 31 minutes: Emerson Royal started the play on the right, exchanging passes with Arrascaeta and Carrascal before invading the area. Before finishing, however, he was dispossessed by the Corinthians defense.

At 33, Corinthians made the last changes to the team: Ryan, Cacá, and Vitinho came in for Maycon, João Pedro, and Breno Bidon. The game remained open, but the Alvinegro struggled to organize offensive plays.

Only at 40 minutes did Timão create a clear chance again: Vitinho received in front of Flamengo's area, cut to the left, and shot powerfully, for a save by Rossi. On the corner, no one arrived to finish.

Until, at 44, Flamengo turned the game around: Plata quickly took a throw-in on the right, finding Carrascal, who advanced and passed to Luiz Araújo, who finished first-time, again leaving Hugo Souza no chance.

In stoppage time, Corinthians launched into attack. Matheuzinho had an opportunity upon receiving on the right, cutting to the middle and shooting, but off-target. Shortly after, Matheuzinho tried again from a free-kick, directly into Rossi's hands. Finally, at 48, Vitinho tried to find Raniele in the area, but the midfielder failed to control, killing the play.

At 51 minutes, the referee ended the second half, with the visitors winning at the Neo Química Arena.

Next Fixture

Corinthians' next match will be against Internacional, on Wednesday, October 1st, at 7:30 PM. The match will be valid for the 26th round of the 2025 Brazilian Championship and will take place at the Beira-Rio stadium in Porto Alegre.
