Corporate card: missing files and officials’ testimonies spark probe

The investigations into the alleged improper expenses on Corinthians' corporate cards from past administrations have seen new developments, both internally and externally. The main new fact concerns the discovery that the invoices submitted by the club to the Justice Commissions of the Deliberative Council (CD) and the São Paulo Public Prosecutor's Office (MP-SP) do not cover the entire administration of former president Andrés Sanchez.

The information was initially disclosed by Gazeta Esportiva, which revealed that the gap refers to the first seven months of Andrés' term, between January and July 2018. The outlet also found that, at the time, the club only had an American Express card, without the right to designate dependents. Only with the formalization of the agreement with Santander, in July of that year, was it possible to individualize the control of expenses, including for the president.

The report also states that the prosecutor responsible for the case at the MP will await the lifting of bank secrecy to access Corinthians' financial information for the period. However, the Justice Commission took a different path, formally requesting the financial department to send the American Express card invoices for the open period.

In a preliminary analysis of the invoices already delivered to the internal commission, the body found about R$ 190,000 in expenses considered suspicious during Andrés Sanchez's term, with many of the listed expenses — such as those in hospitals, clinics, furniture stores, electronics, air taxi companies, and automotive centers — lacking receipts or justifications indicating direct links to the club's demands.

In light of this, the commission summoned former directors responsible for overseeing the use of the cards to provide clarifications, including Matias Ávila (former finance director), Osmar Basílio, and Guilherme Strenger, as well as other members of the Fiscal Council (CF) and the Guidance Council (CORI). However, so far, only the first has provided clarifications to the Justice Commission – the other two did not attend, citing other commitments, and are expected to be heard at another time.

In addition to these names, the commission also summoned two new figures to provide clarifications on the case. One is Roberson de Medeiros, known as “Dunga,” then vice-president of CORI, who took over the body during Andrés' term due to Strenger's temporary absence. The other is Haroldo Dantas, the current president of the CF, who at the time replaced Basílio, who was removed due to a club project in partnership with a college. Both are expected to be heard next Monday, the 13th.

Andrés Sanchez, on the other hand, has not yet been called. The expectation is that he will be the last to testify, after the Justice Commission concludes the collection of other testimonies and has all the documentation in hand for analysis.
