Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta will not undergo surgery on his knee injury.

The 28-year-old has been managing the issue since November, with the club opting for a cautious approach rather than an immediate surgical intervention.

Mateta was notably left out of the FA Cup third-round defeat to Macclesfield after Palace decided not to risk him on an artificial surface.

Concerns over the knee also contributed to a proposed move to AC Milan collapsing on transfer deadline day.

The Serie A club ultimately chose not to proceed after medical checks raised doubts about Mateta’s condition.

Manager Oliver Glasner revealed that a fourth medical opinion was sought before a final decision was taken and surgery was ruled out.

Glasner explained that the injury was not as severe as initially feared and could be managed through rehabilitation.

While Mateta will still miss games, the decision removes the uncertainty surrounding a lengthy recovery from surgery.

The French forward will now focus on strengthening the muscles around the knee to provide greater support.

Glasner confirmed that Mateta will not return to full training for at least the next two weeks. Any comeback will be gradual, with careful monitoring to ensure no further damage occurs.

Avoiding surgery also keeps alive Mateta’s hopes of forcing his way into France’s squad for the summer World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Glasner stressed the importance of clarity for the player after weeks of speculation around his future. He confirmed Mateta will remain a Palace player at least until the summer.
