Real Madrid defenders Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao suffered injuries during the 5-2 defeat against Atletico Madrid yesterday.
Militao was kicked on his left ankle by Alexander Sorloth early in the game, which forced him off at half-time. Raul Asencio replaced the Brazilian.
Carvajal was taken off at the hour mark after sustaining a potential soleus injury, with Eduardo Camavinga replacing him.
Both defenders will undergo medical tests today to determine the extent of their injuries, although they are likely to miss Tuesday’s Champions League away clash against Kairat Almaty.
It deepens the injury woes in Madrid’s defence, with Antonio Rudiger and Trent Alexander-Arnold already sidelined with hamstring issues.
Caravajal and Militao returned to action earlier this season after missing a large chunk of the 2024/25 season with knee injuries.
Atletico ended manager Xabi Alonso’s six-match winning streak in La Liga. Madrid held a 2-1 lead before Diego Simeone’s side mounted a monumental comeback.
Alonso is now short-handed in the right-back position. Asencio and Federico Valverde are potential options to play there.
Alvaro Carreras or David Alaba could partner Dean Huijsen in central defence after Militao’s injury.
Carreras, who is a natural left-back, produced a sensational performance as a makeshift centre-back in the 4-1 win against Levante.
Madrid are at the top of the La Liga table with 18 points, but Barcelona can leapfrog them if they beat Real Sociedad tonight.
