Spain had a game to forget against Cape Verde in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener, as Luis de la Fuente’s side struggled to break down their opponents’ stubborn defence.
One of the pre-tournament favourites, La Roja‘s performance left a lot to be desired, although it must be said that they played without two of their most important players: Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams.
A frustrating 0-0 draw with Cape Verde has immediately raised questions, but it is important to stay calm and not hit the panic button yet.
That is exactly what Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo has also said, sending a message of calm and belief.
As quoted by SPORT, the Barça star has spoken with confidence about Spain’s chances, saying the feeling inside the group is that they can do something big on the world stage after winning the 2024 Euros.

“It’s a real goal, we know it’s a very important year and after the European Championship, I think all of Spain turned to us. The feeling is that we can do something great again at a global level,” he said.
“And I think everyone knows that. When the days begin to pass and the time begins to play in that competition, I think Spain is going to turn around.”
The draw was a disappointing result for Spain, especially against a team playing its first-ever World Cup match.
Olmo spoke about the demands of playing for Barça and Spain and the responsibility that comes with it.
“Wearing the colours of Barça or the National Team requires responsibility and maximum demand,” the Spaniard acknowledged.
“You have to win, you have to play well, but that’s not pressure, for me it’s preparation, work, mentality, but from doing what you like.”

Olmo’s role matters. He is not just another Spain player, he is one of the Blaugrana names carrying responsibility in this tournament.
With his intelligence between the lines, timing in the box and ability to connect attacks, Spain need him to give their possession more bite.
Finally, the La Masia graduate also spoke about the challenges of leaving Barça and going to Croatia to kick-start his professional career.
Reflecting on his journey, Olmo stated: “Nobody gives you anything. At least no one has given it to me, especially when I started in Croatia.
“The first year went very well, but in the second year I didn’t participate as much as I would have liked. I had to learn to continue working and to focus on myself.”
After the opening draw, Spain need more than nice combinations. They need sharper final actions, better movement around the penalty area and players willing to take responsibility when the game becomes tight.
That is where Olmo can be decisive. He is not a pure winger or a fixed No. 10, which is exactly why he can help change the rhythm. He can receive inside, arrive late, combine quickly and pull defenders into uncomfortable areas.
Luis de la Fuente got it wrong by bringing on the Barça playmaker as late as he did last night. In the absence of Lamine and Nico Williams, there is no better player than Spain’s No. 10 to play between the lines and create chances.
