The BBC reports that the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel unanimously agreed Leeds United should not have faced Brentford without Gabriel Gudmundsson, after his second yellow at Selhurst Park was deemed incorrect.

It is the second time in a fortnight the panel has judged a major error against Leeds. Earlier in March it reviewed the decision to refuse a penalty for a Luke O’Nien challenge on Pascal Struijk at Elland Road, in a 1-0 defeat by Sunderland.

This latest ruling related to Thomas Bramall’s call to dismiss Gudmundsson for a challenge on Ismaila Sarr. Daniel Farke insisted after the match the tackle did not warrant a caution. Bramall had forgotten he had booked Gudmundsson in the first half and had to be reminded before showing red.

The panel assessed there was minimal contact and that the challenge was careless rather than clearly reckless. Reduced to 10, Leeds spent almost the entire second half defending and earned a 0-0 draw.

Without Gudmundsson they struggled to create chances, particularly down the left, in their next outing at Brentford, another 0-0 stalemate.

VAR cannot review second yellow cards at present, but from next season officials will be able to ask referees to revisit clearly wrong second bookings.
