FC Bayern put down a clear marker in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. Vincent Kompany’s side won 6-1 away at Atalanta Bergamo to put themselves in an almost perfect position for the second leg in Munich. However, the convincing performance was overshadowed by several injuries
Three Bayern players – Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala and Jonas Urbig – had to leave the pitch or receive treatment during the match. The clear victory in Italy therefore leaves a lot to worry about
The evening was particularly bitter for Alphonso Davies, who had actually celebrated his comeback in Bergamo after having to take several weeks off due to a torn muscle fibre
Davies was substituted at half-time, but was only able to play for around 30 minutes. After a tackle, the left-back immediately signalled that he would not be able to continue. Shortly afterwards, the 25-year-old had to be substituted, visibly emotional and in tears
It is still unclear how serious the injury is, but if the suspicion of a new muscle injury is confirmed, it would be a serious setback for the German record champions
The next shock for Munich followed shortly before the final whistle: Jamal Musiala also had to come off injured
The attacking player had been substituted after the break and crowned his strong performance with a goal to make it 6:0 at the interval. However, Musiala repeatedly grabbed his left ankle in the closing stages and was visibly limping around the pitch
As Bayern had already exhausted their quota of substitutions, they had to finish the game short-handed
Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig was not without injuries either. When Atalanta conceded a late goal to make it 1:6 through Mario Pasalic, there was a collision in which the 22-year-old received a blow to the head
Urbig looked visibly dazed afterwards
In sporting terms, the evening was a resounding success for FC Bayern, who created an excellent starting position for the second leg in the Allianz Arena with their clear away win
However, the gala performance could be overshadowed by injury worries. The club are now hoping that Davies and Musiala in particular will be given the all-clear quickly – because FC Bayern can hardly do without its key players in the decisive phase of the season.
