In Bilbao there is hope of overturning the cup semi-final against Real after a 0-1 first leg at San Mamés. Club great De Marcos voiced that belief while being honoured at the Sociedad Bilbaína.

He received the Dama Bilbaína sculpture for his 16 seasons, recognising his values on and off the pitch. According to AS, the event gathered family, former team-mates Susaeta, Gurpegi and Beñat, and Bilbao’s mayor, Juan Mari Aburto.

The distinction reflects his 573 official appearances, one Copa del Rey and two Supercopa titles, and his role as a club reference. He said such prizes are not a one-off, carrying historic weight that demands being up to the mark.

He credited family, coaches and team-mates, sharing the merit with those closest to him. Created in 1995 by sculptor José Ramón Gómez Nazábal, the Dama Bilbaína has honoured key institutions and figures in Bizkaia, becoming a symbolic Bilbao award.

Turning to Athletic’s present, the former captain said he sees the team in good shape and on a positive run, stressing the need for confidence. He highlighted collective strength and everyone’s contribution in handling demanding moments.

With the calendar edging towards a key date, he focused on the next test, a super important derby, and reinforced the call for unity. He will also be honoured on Saturday in Gamiz-Fika at the Athletic supporters’ clubs’ gathering.
