Roberto De Zerbi explained that he understands why Spurs fans are unhappy with Cristian Romero not being in the stands for their final match of the Premier League season.
Cristian Romero will be out injured for Spurs’ final match with a knee injury he suffered against Sunderland last month, but he will also not be at the game at all. Instead, the centre half will be watching his boyhood side Belgrano face River Plate in the Argentina Primera Division.
De Zerbi says that the decision for Romero to go to Argentina was made by the Spurs medical staff.
“He spoke with the medical staff,” he explained. “Together they decided to go to Argentina to complete the rehab with the Argentinian medical staff.
“He spoke last week with me. He showed always that he wanted to stay with us. He has an injury and we have to accept it.
“I’m not stupid. I want to be clear. I’m not stupid. If I understand there is any player or some player who thinks for himself before the club, I can’t be the same Roberto. But with Romero, I can’t say nothing because with me in my time, he has been correct at the beginning until now.”
Despite explaining that Romero has wanted to stay with Spurs De Zerbi says that he “100%” understands why Spurs fans are unhappy with the club captain.
The Italian was asked whether Romero has already played his final match for Spurs ahead of the summer transfer window.
“I don’t know,” he answered. “I think Crisitian is a top player and with me was a top guy.”
“For the future, I don’t know I don’t know the future tomorrow is a crucial game for us for our future for our fans for our club. We have to stay together and I don’t want answer about Romero, or Kulusevski because they won’t play.”
