A trial has been in operation for the last few home matches and has been deemed a success.

Which means that for the remaining Newcastle United games this season, the road closures will be in place after each home match.

Newcastle City Council official announcement – 12 September 2025:

Short-term closures of Barrack Road, immediately outside the stadium, will remain in place for the rest of the season.

Measures trialled for getting football fans home safely will continue for the rest of the season.

Short-term closures of Barrack Road, immediately outside the stadium, were successfully trialled for three fixtures for fans leaving St James’ Park following the final whistle. With traffic diverted away from Barrack Road, large crowds of fans were able to leave the stadium quickly and safely on foot, which had minimum disruption on other road users in the area.

Due to the success of the trial, Newcastle City Council, Northumbria Police and Newcastle United will continue the short-term closures of Barrack Road and fans should expect this to be in place for most games. There may be revised arrangements in place for some matches, such as the Champions League fixtures, and the council will advise on any changes on a match-by-match basis.

Cllr Juna Sathian, Cabinet Member for Climate and Transport at Newcastle City Council, said: “The key aim of this trial was to get fans home safely and easily. I am pleased they will remain in place as it improves safety for the large crowds of people exiting St James’ Park, with minimum disruption to other road users during the short closure.

“We will continue to listen to feedback from fans, residents and transport partners through the season to see if further improvements can be made.”

Chief Superintendent Mark Hall, Football Lead for Northumbria Police, said: “The safety of fans on a match day will always be our number one priority – and we’re pleased with how the post-whistle road closures have worked for recent fixtures.

“As ever, we will continue to monitor the enhanced measures in place alongside the club and council as well as the public – and take on board any feedback.”

The normal pre-match closures will be in place ahead of Saturday’s 3pm kick off and, at the final whistle, Barrack Road will be closed between Stanhope Street and St James’ Boulevard for up to 45 minutes or until the crowds have cleared.

Vehicles will not be permitted on this section of Barrack Road during the closure and drivers will be required to follow signed diversions via Westgate Road, Brighton Grove and Stanhope Street. Access for emergency services will be maintained.

A number of Stagecoach bus services that normally travel along and stop on Barrack Road will also be diverted and passengers will be required to use alternative bus stops while the short closure is in place.

The X50 soccer bus, which runs to the MetroCentre Park and Ride, will pick up passengers from the top of St James’ Boulevard, outside of the Citygate building.
