Deniz Undav’s winner against Ghana did not shift Julian Nagelsmann’s stance, the Germany head coach saying the Stuttgart striker is not yet a starter. The back-and-forth continued despite a successful international break.
Undav stayed on the bench in Germany’s 4-3 win away to Switzerland on Friday. Last night he came on at half-time and made it 2-1 in the 88th minute.
After the match, Nagelsmann said Undav had barely touched the ball and had no chances before the goal, crediting Leroy Sané for the set-up. He said the forward is welcome to put pressure on his selection.
He argued Undav can capitalise when opponents tire and, with heat in the USA this summer, stressed the need for impact substitutes. For now, he sees Undav as a substitute and said the week-long debate should end.
In the mixed zone, Undav said it had been a while since he featured and that he hoped to score when introduced. He thanked German supporters for their backing over the past week.
He said he knows his role, which can change with every goal, and that it is up to the coach, though he aims to improve his lot. He pointed to Stuttgart form and said he can influence games as a starter or a substitute.
Undav called himself a creative goalscorer and said he can prove it over a full 90 minutes.
