Didier Deschamps’ mother dies, France boss to miss Norway match

Didier Deschamps’ mother has died, and the France head coach will return to France to attend her funeral and miss the Norway match, the French Football Federation said in a statement on Tuesday night.

He will not oversee training before Norway v France, and will not be on the bench for the final Group I game at the 2026 World Cup.

In his absence, assistant Guy Stéphan will take charge of the squad until Deschamps returns to the Bleus’ base in Waltham, Massachusetts.

The players observed a minute’s silence in memory of Deschamps’ mother before training on Tuesday.

France are already through to the last 16 after beating Senegal 3-1 and Iraq 3-0. They aim to finish top of the group against Erling Haaland’s Norway at 21:00 on Friday in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
