Double setback for Joelinton – So cruel

Joelinton was brilliant on Monday night.

The Newcastle United midfielder a dominant figure as despite a man down, United still the better and more dangerous team against Liverpool.

Then a nightmare for Joelinton and Newcastle United, with Sandro Tonali already subbed off with a worrying injury to his arm/shoulder, the Brazilian then subbed off on 76 minutes.

Joelinton stretching for a ball with his challenge and in the process picking up what looks likely to be a bad injury. The NUFC star left in clearly great pain on the ground and absolutely gutted as he was helped off the pitch by his best mate Bruno Guimaraes.

Eddie Howe admitted after the match that it doesn’t look good and Joelinton now set to be missing from Newcastle’s team for who knows how long.

However, it is doubly cruel on Joelinton.

Only hours before Monday night’s match, Brazil national team coach Carlo Ancelotti announced the 23 players called up for the September internationals.

Less than 10 months before the 2026 World Cup finals and with Brazil already having qualified, Joelinton brought back into the squad (see below) for matches against Chile and Bolivia.

The Brazil squad for the September 2025 internationals:

Goalkeepers

Alisson (Liverpool)

Bento (Al-Nassr)

Hugo Souza (Corinthians)

Defenders

Alexsandro Ribeiro (Lille)

Fabrício Bruno (Cruzeiro)

Gabriel Magalhães (Arsenal)

Marquinhos (PSG)

Alex Sandro (Flamengo)

Caio Henrique (Monaco)

Douglas Santos (Zenit)

Vanderson (Monaco)

Wesley (Roma)

Midfielders

Andrey Santos (Chelsea)

Bruno Guimarães (Newcastle United)

Casemiro (Manchester United)

Joelinton (Newcastle United)

Lucas Paquetá (West Ham)

Forwards

Estêvão (Chelsea)

Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal)

João Pedro (Chelsea)

Kaio Jorge (Cruzeiro)

Luiz Henrique (Zenit)

Matheus Cunha (Man U)

Raphinha (Barcelona)

Richarlison (Tottenham)

It appears to be a foregone conclusion that Joelinton will now be forced to withdraw from this Brazil squad.

However, here’s hoping he is back on the pitch for club AND country very soon, that his injury proves not to be as bad as first feared.
