After having showcased his abilities with FC Barcelona beyond any doubt during the last two years, the young winger Lamine Yamal now has another challenge facing him, as he is competing for the World Cup 2026 with the Spanish national team.
There is no doubt that he would have to play at his best level if Spain are to make it all the way and lift the biggest international trophy once again. As things stand, they have qualified for the quarter-finals, and are set to face Belgium in this stage of the competition.
Luckily for Spain, one of the most talent Belgian players in recent history, Eden Hazard, is already retired and would not be playing in this game scheduled for this coming Friday. But the former Real Madrid forward would still be closely watching his national team, and appeared in an interview with MARCA ahead of this match.
He talked mostly about the World Cup in this media appearance, and one of the questions he was asked was about Yamal and the Spanish national team. The Belgian icon highlighted how the Barcelona youngster’s early career resembles his own early career:
“Lamine Yamal reminds me a little of myself when I first started playing. I was about the same age, and everyone had high expectations of me. But ultimately, if he enjoys himself on the pitch the way only he knows how, I’m convinced he’ll have a great World Cup. He’s the kind of player people love to watch. That’s what football is all about—having fun and making people dream.”
Having played at the highest level from a very young age, Eden Hazard’s is in a particularly good position to understand what Lamine Yamal is going through. After having impressed with Lille early in his career, he moved to one of the biggest clubs in Europe, Chelsea, where he spent a good part of his career. After that, he moved to La Liga, as he played for the Blaugranes’ bitter rivals, Real Madrid.
Unfortunately, he was unable to showcase his best talents in Spain. But hopefully, Lamine Yamal would take his advice and learn from his career to ensure he also has realizes his true potential and ends up writing his name in Barcelona and European football history.
