Ederson and Wesley have both spoken out after the Atalanta midfielder was called up to replace the injured Roma defender in the Brazil squad for the 2026 World Cup: ‘This is not the end of a dream,’ the right-back said.
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has been forced to make changes to his World Cup squad, replacing the injured Wesley with Ederson.
Wesley had sustained a muscle injury during a friendly against Egypt over the weekend and will not recover in time for the World Cup.
“Today, I have to put a dream on hold because of an injury. It hurts not being able to continue wearing the Brazilian National Team jersey at this moment, but anyone who knows my story knows that giving up has never been an option,” the Roma defender wrote on Instagram.

“I came from far away. I faced hardships, overcame challenges, and pushed through many obstacles to get where I am today. Nothing was handed to me. Every achievement was built through hard work, faith, sacrifice, and resilience.
“That’s why I’m facing this moment the same way I’ve faced every other challenge: with my head held high, trust in God, and the certainty that I will come back even stronger.
“Thank you all for your messages, your support, and your encouragement. This is not the end of a dream. It is simply another chapter in my story.
“Falling is part of the journey. Getting back up has always been my greatest strength.”
Ederson, an Atalanta midfielder on the verge of joining Manchester United, also commented on his call-up for the World Cup, sending a message to Wesley as well.
“God’s plans are always bigger than mine. I’m honoured to be part of the greatest national team in the world,” Ederson wrote on Instagram.

“Wesley, we are all with you; we’ll go ahead altogether.”
Ancelotti’s Brazil will make their 2026 World Cup debut on June 14 against Morocco, then face Haiti on June 20 and end the group phase against Scott McTominay’s Scotland on June 25.
Brazil is the country with the most World Cup victories, five, followed by Italy and Germany with four each.
