Ederson has been called up by Brazil to replace injured Roma defender Wesley for the 2026 World Cup, with both players addressing the change on social media.

According to Football Italia, Carlo Ancelotti adjusted his squad after Wesley sustained a muscle injury in a friendly against Egypt over the weekend and will not recover in time, bringing in the Atalanta midfielder.

Wesley wrote on Instagram: “Today, I have to put a dream on hold because of an injury. It hurts not being able to continue wearing the Brazilian National Team jersey at this moment, but anyone who knows my story knows that giving up has never been an option.”

“Falling is part of the journey. Getting back up has always been my greatest strength.”

Ederson, an Atalanta midfielder on the verge of joining Manchester United, also posted a message and acknowledged Wesley. “God’s plans are always bigger than mine. I’m honoured to be part of the greatest national team in the world,” he wrote.

Brazil begin on 14 June against Morocco, then face Haiti on 20 June. They conclude the group against Scott McTominay’s Scotland on 25 June.

Brazil have won the World Cup a record five times, with Italy and Germany on four each.
