Worrying Wembley defeat highlights Three Lions’ reliance on Harry Kane heading into World Cup

England fell short of the Wembley expectation levels for the second time in four days as they were beaten 1-0 by Japan.

Looking for a much-improved performance after their flat 1-1 draw with Uruguay on Friday, England made a poor start on that front as they fell behind through a goal from a familiar source when Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma put Japan ahead.

Thomas Tuchel’s men had 67 minutes to turn the game around but failed to do so, leaving the England manager with more questions than answers ahead of naming his World Cup squad in just two months’ time.

Jordan Pickford 5

Conceded in an England shirt for the first time since October 2024 as Mitoma’s low strike beat him.

Ben White 4

A less eventful night than against Uruguay for the Arsenal man, whose performance at right-back won’t have convinced the manager.

Ezri Konsa 5

Was slightly lax as England ran back towards their own goal in the lead-up to Japan’s goal but otherwise calm and composed. One chance to score from a corner missed.

Marc Guehi 6

Stand-in captain careful with possession and used his strength to brush Japan’s interchangeable forwards off the ball.

Nico O’Reilly 5

Some nice touches on the ball but not the performance he will have hoped for at left-back. Beaten by Ritsu Doan following one long cross-field pass. A worry.

Elliot Anderson 7

Looked England’s most experienced general on the night, despite this being only his seventh cap.

Kobbie Mainoo 5

Kept hold of the ball really well but did not impose himself on the game quite as much as he’d have liked.

Morgan Rogers 4

Wasted a really good free-kick opportunity in the second half when he hit the wall, and didn’t impress.

Cole Palmer 6

Lost the ball in the lead-up to the game’s only goal. In attacking positions, as bright as anyone and as comfortable in tight areas. Sought to make things happen while he was on - though England never did.

Anthony Gordon 5

A threatening runner who found some nice passes but also gave the ball away and did not necessarily press his case to start on the left over Marcus Rashford.

Something about Foden and England has just never quite clicked and continues to falter. Disappointing yet again and running out of chances.

Subs

Lewis Hall (O’Reilly, 59’) 7

Really good cameo off the bench. Was lively, took risks, and was just what England needed: a proper full-back who stayed wide. So nearly equalised late on.

Jarrod Bowen (Palmer, 59’) 5

Tried to make an impact as a substitute but was quiet. Missed a chance with a bicycle kick that landed just wide.

Dominic Solanke (Foden, 59’) 4

A quiet cameo for the Tottenham striker.

Tino Livramento (White, 59’) 4

A quiet evening for the substitute right-back after he came on in place of White.

Marcus Rashford (Gordon, 71’) 6

Had a glorious chance when he dug out a fine shot and forced a good save.

James Garner (Mainoo, 71’) 6

Slotted into midfield well when he came on and has done his cause no harm over this first senior camp.

Harry Maguire (Konsa, 82’) N/A

Dan Burn (Guehi, 82’) N/A

Not used: Trafford, Steele, D Henderson, Bellingham, Barnes, Spence.
